Tools & Items
Every Big Walk tool and where it lives: the map and compass in the Map Room, the GPS by the green tower, walkie-talkies, binoculars and backpacks.
Big Walk is a game about walking and talking, and its tools and items are what turn a group of lost friends into a navigating, signaling, puzzle-cracking team. By default each player can hold one item at a time (per games.gg's tools guide), so what you pick up — and who holds it — genuinely matters. This page covers the tools with verified information only: where to find the map, compass, GPS, walkie-talkies and binoculars, how each gadget works, and what your group should grab first.
The official Steam page sums the category up as "Tools and Toys: Walkie-talkies, laser pointers, binoculars, megaphones, flares, whiteboards (?), cowbells (??), and a big golden head (???)" — the question marks are House House's own. The guide below fills in where the important ones actually live.
How Many Items Can You Carry in Big Walk?
The carry rules, confirmed across TheGamer's and games.gg's tool guides:
- Default: one item per player. Whatever you hold occupies your hands.
- Waist Bag: +1 small-item slot. Found in the round blue buildings around the island; it only fits smaller items like the foldable map, radios and walkie-talkies.
- Backpack: +1 full slot. Also from the round blue buildings; it accepts any item, and a friend has to help you put it on.
- Net result: a fully kitted player carries up to three items — one in hand, one on the belt, one on the back. This matches the carry system described in our all puzzles guide.
Navigation Tools
Map — How do you get the map in Big Walk?
The foldable map sits in the Map Room, on a table (GameRant's walkthrough calls it a bench), next to the compass. The catch: the Map Room only opens after your group completes the Red Tower — five nearby puzzles, five puzzle rewards deposited, one filed key. The map you carry out is the handheld version of the room's giant floor diorama, and it shows the island's numbered coordinate grid, which is exactly what the 4166 1899 puzzle is built around.
Compass
On the same table/bench in the Map Room (TheGamer and GameRant agree on the location). games.gg describes its function plainly: it shows cardinal directions, so you can orient the foldable map in the field instead of guessing which way the grid is rotated.
Binoculars
TheGamer places binoculars at every control-panel tower — the towers where puzzle rewards get deposited. Pick a pair up on your first tower visit. games.gg adds the use case: zoom in to scout distant puzzle locations before your group commits to a walk.
GPS — where is it, and how does it work?
PC Gamer's walkthrough of the 4166 1899 puzzle describes a GPS device in a red frame just outside the green tower, next to a sign printed with more numbers. It displays the live coordinates of whoever is holding it: you can hold it up to read the screen, or stick it onto a backpack so it travels hands-free. The intended two-player play is one player wearing the GPS while another reads the screen and directs them — walk until the numbers match your target.
Source note: this device is described, in the coverage we checked in full, by PC Gamer's article only. Other tool guides (TheGamer, games.gg) do not list a separate GPS item, so treat these details as single-source for now. For the puzzle it solves, see the 4166 1899 solution; the map route there needs no GPS at all.
Communication Tools
Walkie-Talkie — how do walkie-talkies work?
Big Walk's proximity voice chat fades with distance, echoes in tunnels and muffles through walls — walkie-talkies are the counter to all of it. With a pair of them, two players can talk from any distance (TheGamer, games.gg), and the official Steam page says the signal comes through crackly, which is part of the charm. TheGamer lists two findable spots: the platform below the Red Tower and the red tunnel below the Red Tower, and notes the unit can be mounted on your belt so your hands stay free — or stashed in a waist bag.
Megaphone
On Steam's official tool list. TheGamer gives two locations: among the yellow shapes north of the Yellow Tower and in the woods east of the Green Tower. It amplifies your voice so the whole group can hear one caller.
Radio
Found past the flashlight spot on the red bridge (TheGamer). It plays music — the practical use is leaving it somewhere as an audio breadcrumb the group can follow back.
Laser Pointer
On the official list, with locations from TheGamer: the Map Room table and the tops of towers. games.gg's framing: point at the world to give nearby teammates a precise direction — much clearer than describing "the rock kind of left of the tree."
Flare Gun
TheGamer: found near most puzzle solution areas, and the light shoots upward. games.gg adds what it is for: firing a flare marks your approximate position on the map for the rest of the group — the "we found something, come here" button.
Whiteboard
On a wall in the Map Room (TheGamer) and on the official Steam list. Leave written messages for the group — useful for a plan everyone can re-read.
Paintbrush
games.gg lists a paintbrush for drawing markings on the ground and painting surfaces so teammates can follow your trail. It does not appear in the other tool guides we read, so treat it as single-source.
Light and Vision Tools
Flashlight (Ball Lamp)
TheGamer places a flashlight to the left of the red bridge from the starting area, with more at the tops of most colored towers. games.gg covers the same need under the name Ball Lamp — a round lamp that lights your path at night, which their guide treats as mandatory for night navigation. Two names, same job: the guides agree the island gets dark.
Telescopes
Fixed telescopes stand at lookout points — the mountain overlook in the Red Tower walkthrough is one example (TheGamer/GameRant). games.gg also lists a telescope tool that works like binoculars but lights up distant targets and puzzle items.
Keys and Officially-Teased Oddities
- Key Cutter — games.gg names a key-cutting tool that shapes raw keys into usable forms for the Tower Challenges; this is the same key-filing step our Red Tower walkthrough covers at the contraptions between the tower and the gym. Single-source naming (games.gg), but the filing step itself is confirmed by GameRant.
- Cowbells — on the official Steam list with House House's own "??". No location in any guide we read.
- The big golden head — officially listed with "???" and described in official materials as the blindfold-style prop for an obstacle-course activity.
What Tools Should You Get First?
There is no required order, but the coverage points at a sensible opening shopping list:
- Map and compass — finish the Red Tower early. Every later puzzle hunt gets easier once the island has coordinates.
- Two walkie-talkies — grab the pair around the Red Tower platform area and stay in contact when the group splits.
- Binoculars — pick them up at the first control-panel tower you climb.
- A backpack or waist bag — check the round blue buildings; +1 or +2 carry slots changes how much gadgetry the group can field at once.
FAQ
How do you get the map in Big Walk?
Complete the Red Tower — five nearby puzzles, five puzzle rewards deposited at the top terminal, and the filed key — to unlock the Map Room. The foldable map is on a table inside, next to the compass.
Where is the GPS in Big Walk?
In a red frame just outside the green tower, next to a numbered sign, per PC Gamer's walkthrough. This is the only source in our checked coverage that describes the GPS as its own item.
How does the GPS work in Big Walk?
It shows the live coordinates of its holder on a screen. Hold it up to read, or stick it on a backpack: one player wears it and walks while another reads the numbers and directs them — the standard method for the 4166 1899 coordinates puzzle.
How do walkie-talkies work in Big Walk?
Pick up two of them (platform and red tunnel below the Red Tower) and the holders can talk at any distance, with a crackly signal. Belt-mounting or waist-bag storage keeps hands free.
What tools should you get first in Big Walk?
Map and compass via the Red Tower, then a pair of walkie-talkies, binoculars from the first tower you climb, and a backpack or waist bag from a round blue building.
How many items can you carry in Big Walk?
One by default. A waist bag adds a small-items slot and a backpack adds a full slot — up to three items for a fully kitted player.
Where do you get a backpack in Big Walk?
In the round blue buildings around the island (TheGamer; also covered in our all puzzles guide). A friend has to help you equip it.
Is there a flashlight in Big Walk?
Yes — to the left of the red bridge from the starting area, and at the tops of most colored towers (TheGamer). games.gg calls the same night-lighting item the Ball Lamp.
